THE HON. JAMES ALLEN AND PROFESSOR HUNTER.
Sir.—l regret that my letter, nuhIfshed in your issue of Saturday last,, should have done even tho semblanco of an injustice to Mr. Allen.
Your report of the proceeclings of the Education Committee.contained the following passage: "In refereneo to, this telegram (from tho Otasro University Council) tho Hon. J. Allen reported that, nt the request of the Otago University Council, ho had met them on Saturday. He explained that in regard to the evidence of Dr. Hunter they (the TTnivcrsitv Conned) would have been indignant but .for the fact that those who came from Dunedin knew in what estimation Dr. Hunter was held. ITc was ignored in Dunedin. absolutely, when ho criticised the University—he was so one-sided. Tho council thoui'ht that the
evidence might havo some effect if read bv those who did not know Dunediu University. They ivcro very strongly of opinion that they ought not to take tho evidonco of Dr. Hunter seriously, but they had decidcd to give ovidenco on tho Otago Medical School." At least one of the Dunedin papers suggested that the Minister was coming to Dunedin on University business. I trust I may be pardoned then for my inaccurate statement which Mr. Allen has now corrected. Tho reasons that took .Mr Allen to Dunedin do not, however, affect tho main point of my letter, viz!, that it is opposed to the interests of justico and contrary to British judicial methods for Mr. Allen and Sir. Sidoy (members of tho Otago University Council) to sit on n committee that is called upon to investigate clargos aijainsh the administration of that body. —I am, etc.. THOS. A. HUNTER.
