THE HUTT ROAD.
CITY TO ASSUME CONTROL,
The broad highway which extends from Wellington lo • Petone is briofly mentioned in the Railways Statement presented to Parliament yesterday by the Hon. W. H. Herries. '.'The Hutt Road having been completed in, readiness for handing over to the local bodies," the Minister remarks, "a Commisionor was appointed in terms of the Act to hear evidcnco and' apportion the charges incurred in connection with the formation of the road. The report of the Commissioner has now been received, and is engaging tho attention of tha Government, I anticipate that a final decision will be come to at an early date, and, atf it is essential that the Railway Department should be relieved of the responsibility attaohing to tho upkeep of the road, over which it has practically no jurisdiction, arrangements are being made to vest the control of the thoroughfare in the Wellington City Council, which body has the largest interests involved. The apportionment of charges as,fixed by tho Commissioner will also be gazetted in due course.
