His Excellcnoy the Governor will presido at the opening of the twonty-fourth annual art exhibition, to take plaoe at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Ootober 4.
Sir Francis Caradoo Price, Bart., arrived in Wellington by the. Sydney steamer yesterday. Sir Francis is the fifth holder of a title created in 1816, having succeeded his brother i& 1901. He was formerly a lieutenant in _ thol First Battalion, 'Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and served in the South African war. In 1909 he married Miss Marjorie Russell, daughter of the Hon. Sir William It. Russell, M.L.C., who died on Tuesday last. His visit to New Zealand is thus mado under sad' auspices.
His Lordship the Bishop cf Christcliurch, (Dr. Julius) returned to New Zealand yesterday after a short yisit to Sydney.
Br. Cameron, an ex-member of tho City Counoil, returned from Europe and England yesterday.
Tho Hon. G. J. Smith and tho. Bon. J. Anstey left Wellington for the south by the Wahine last evening.
Mr. W. Pryor,'organiser for tho New Zealand Employers' Federation, has left for Napier to attend tho annual dinner of tho local Employees' Association.
Mr. A. Morris Anderson, of tho firm of Petherick and Andenson, accountants, has been appointed secretary to tho Society for the Prevention of Cruelty- to Animals.
Sir Joseph Ward left Lyttelton for Wellington by tho Mararoa last evening. Dr. Chilton and Dr. M.Caw were passengers for the south by tho Wahino last evening.
At a meeting of the Courtenoy Place Congregational Church ' authorities, held last evening, it was decided to extend a call to the Rev. A. E. Hunt, of Timaru. Mr. Hunt has been stationed at Timaru for the past ten years.
Mr. J. H. C. Bond, general traffio manager for tho Union Company, left for tho 6outh by tho Wahino last evening.
Tho death occurred at an early hour yesterday morning of Mrs. Mary Powell, of To Henui, New Plymouth, one of the oldest bottlers in the district, she having arrived in Now Zealand in tho ship Arab, as far back as 1841. Sho was 96 years of age, and until quite recently enjoyed tho best of health. Her husband died many years ago, but she loaves throe grand-children (Messrs. Robert Scriveuor, of Auckland, Charles Scrivenor, of Queensland, and Frank Scrivenor, of .To Henui).
At a meeting of tho directors of the Wellington Bowling- Club, held yesterday, Mr. J. J. Roberts was appointed acting-secretary, vice Mr. Wm. Brrniskill, deceased.
A, pleasant evening was spent at Hall's tea-rooms, Cuha Street, by the employees of tho firm of Messrs. Robert Martin, Ltd., the occasion being a presentation to Mr. E. J. Healy, the firm's city traveller, on tho eve of his marriage. Advantage was taken of tho. occasion to give Sir. T. Taylor f another of tho firm's employees at over 20 years' standing, a present, after his marriage, which took place a few days ago. The chair waß occupied by Mr. A. C. Gillies, seoretary of the firm, in tho absenoe of Mr. W. S. Martin, managing director. Speeches wero made by _ the heads of departments, after, which songs and other musical items were contributed by Messrs. Creed, Gainor, Alexander, Baumgart, Batcholor, Wobb, Hart, Kendall,'Smith, and Healy.
Tlio death is announced from Adelaide of Captain Charles Dingle, marina' superintendent, of the Adelaide Steam' Ship Company, who died at his residence, Largs Bay, on September 19 at tlio age of 52. Whilo in Scotland superintending the construction of tho company's now steamers Warilda, Willo« chra, and Waudilla, Captain Dinglo suffered from plourisy. Ho was born in Cornwall and was a fino specimen of tho sturdy sea-faring folk. His record was unstained by accident. On mora than one occasion he distinguished himself by saving life at sea, being a powerful swimmer and quick in emergency.
The Rev. G.,H. Balfour, of First Church, Duneilin, was a passenger to Wellington by the Ulimaroa yesterday. He has been on a visit to Melbourne, oonsequent on tho death of his father, tho Hon. James Balfour.
Mr. W. G. Foster, managing director of tho Wellington Meat Export Company, has received advice per cable from Suez of the death of his eldest son, on boaixl tho P. and 0. steamer Banca.
Tho Rev. D. C. Bates visited Palmerston on Tuesday, and spent some hours with Dr. Martin, who has ohargo of tho local weather reporting station. Mr. Bates continues his tour of inspection to othor weather reporting centres.
