The best of all pipes are thoso mado from meerschaum, tho first of which was smoked by a Hungarian shoemaker in 1723. He was a clever carver, to whom Count Andrass.v brought from Turkey a piece of whitish clay, and it occurred to tho shoemaker that this, being porous, would bo well adapted to pipes, as it would absorb tho nicotine. Ho tried tho experiment by cutting a pipe, which turned out a great success, and this first meerschaum pipo is preserved in tho museum at Pesth. A good understanding between a farmer and his poultry was tho feature of a caso heard at Wilmslow, when a man was charged with the" theft of six hens and a cockerel from the farm of Chin Its Woodward. Mr. Woodward told tho Court tho fowls were taken from a coto in his field, and a few days later he saw them in a garden in Macclesfield.
