THE RAILWAYS STATEMENT.
A FORECAST.
From tho gazetted accounts whicli appear from timo to time and from statements given by tho Minister, it may be assumed that the Railways Statement, to bo laid on the table of the House to-morrow afternoon, will icontain tho following figures:—Total miles open, 2860; capital cost of opened lines, £31,011,220; net profit oil working, £1,265,393; percentage of profit-" to capital invested, 4.04; percentage of working expenses, 68.13; net earnings per average mile open, £446; net earnings per train mile, 33.66; increase in nunioer of passengers, 1,232,-. 745. According to answers given by the Minister in tho Hoilso there will bo a refereiieo to tho level-crossing trouble, and from an answer given by tho Minister last week it is likely that an announcement will be made that bureaus will bo established in the four largo centres where tickets can bo bought without going to tlio railway stations.
