COMMITTEE ALTERATIONS.
As was stated by tile Prime Ministef in tho House of Representatives yesterday tho principal amendment made by, tlio Lands Committee in fho Laud Laws Amendment Bill is a new clause dealing with'the subdivision of Cheviot grazing runs. It reads: "Where the Governor decides that tho land comprised in any, lease nndor Part -IX of tho Land .Act,, 1908, is suitable for closc settlement, tho Land Board shall subdivide tho land into two or moro allotments and shall disposo of tlio same by way of leaso iu tho manner and subject to the conditions provided in the case of subdivision of small grazing runs by Section 28 of tho Land Laws Amendment Act, 1912, all tho provisions of which section shall extend and apply to sucJi leaso." The effect of the section, as the Prima Minister explained, is to give the origV inal holder of tho lea& the right of tak-\ ing up any one of tho allotments into 1 which the run is subdivided. . Another alteration made by the committee is to extend from seven to ten years tho period within which a person 'who has disposed of an allotment, of Crown or settlement laud, is disqualified, save in special circumstances, from acquiring any other area of Crown or settlement land. Tlio disqualification imposed tipon any person who. forfeits a leaso or licenso under Part 111 of the Land Act,,1908, :s similarly extended from seven years to ten. '
