STRIPPED THE SHOP. BURGLARS' JEWELLERY HAUL. Invoroarglll, September 22. Some time between Sunday and this morning tho premises of Mr., A. E. Arthur, jeweller, Tay Street, were enterod by burglars, who - got away with £214 worth. Tho thieves effected an entry through tho baok part of tho promises by boring out a portion of three doors and roaching through thfe aperture to unlock them. Tho thioves evidently had a knowledge of the looality, as tlioy had to scale a brick wall to escape with their booty. They left little of any: value. Mr. Arthur only recently purchased about £300 worth of stock, arid this was v/hat was drawn' on by the burglar. Other jewellers in tho town are rather perturbed over tho affair, and to-day a number had tho bolts and locks on their shops overhauled.
ENERGETIC ENGINE. \ „ ■ \ t TOO FAST FOR THE TIME TABLE. Napjor, September 22. Tho. Railway Department has been frequently urged to speed up tho NapierWellingtoi express. Recently a Glynn, engine was placed on the lino, and owing to its power drivers found it difficult to'maintain the time-table, trains arriving at every station too early. Mr. Hunter, M.P., asked the Government to relieve tho anxiety of the drivers by remodelling the time-table Tlib anxiety has been relies ed by removal of tha engine.
THE MANHOLE. £500 COMPENSATION GRANTED. . Napier, September 21. A caßa wbb heard at the Supreme Court to-day, In which Arthur Joseph Toohill claimed- from Robjohne, _ Hindmarsh and Co. £1000 compensation for injuries received while employed in tho erection of _ a three-story building at Port Ahuriri. A wlro netting had been put over tho top story, and a manliolo cut in it, and paper had been put over the manhole. Plaintiff stopped on it falling right through to thfi basement. He was awarded £524 12s. 3d., less £69 15s. already paid, and costs according to scale.
DIBPUTE OVER HALL. Timaru, September 22. . A conference was held to-day to settle a dispute regarding the ownership and control o£ tho Ambulance Hall in Timaru, which has been idle since, the formal opening some months ago owing to differences of opinion. As a result of tho meeting thero is promised a prompt settlement by vesting the hall m tho Borough Council as trustees, and an amicable arrangement regarding a joint committeo management ana joint collection of necessary funds.
RESIDENCE BURNT. Felldlng, September 22. A dwelling, owned by Mrs. Antrum, and occupied by Mr. Croft, situated near Feilding, was totally destroyed by flro early this morning. The house was insured in tlio State office for £450, and the furnituro in the Standard office for £200. The building was a now house, and was worth £700.
LOST OFFICER FOUND. Auckland, September 22. William Lewis, formerly chief office* of,the Aborlour, who was reported missing after tiho vessel left for South on July 22, has been located hero. He has since bAora doing casual work in the city, and'states ho lias been waiting for a berth in a ship to proceed to New York.
PARKVALE FIRE. v Carterton, September 22. Fire this morning destroyed a house owned and occupied by Walter Dorset, settler, Parkvaio. No particulars are yet to hand, but it is supposed tho nro was duo to a faulty cliimrioy. Mr. Dorset was away at the time. There is an insurance ill tho Xow Zealand office of £950 on tihe house and outbuildings, and on tho, furniture £275. LAUNDRY ON FIRE. Inveroarglll, September 22. On old two-storied wooden dwelling in Tay Street, owned by It and U. Wesney. and occupied by the Dominion Steam Laundry, was gutted by fire on Sunday morning. The building was insured for £425 in tho New Zealand, and tho contents were not insured.
TURNS UP AT LAST. Creymoifth, September 22. _ The overdue barquontino Wanganui. from Grafton, showed up to-day, and was towed in at midday, safe and sound. Sho was 30 days out. Captain White states tho delay was wholly duo to bad weather. Ho appreciated the action of the harbour authorities in sending a tug in search in caso there had been a mishap. The cargo of hardwood is for Greymoiith and Westport. BRIEF MENTION. Tlmarii, September 22. The Timaru Boys' High School is growing. The roll now totals 99, of whom 31 are boarders. Tenders are to bo called for enlarging the dormitories. ' Inveroarglll, September 22. ' Tho wrecked barque Okta has been abandoned,, and her cargo will bo sold by tender. Napier, September 22. Tho Painters' Union by a ballot resolved to join tho Federation of Laboui and tho Social Democratic party.
