NOVEL PAINTING.
W; Smith, tho armless artist, made !his first appearance in New Zealand on Saturday, when nearly 2000 people witnessed his remarkable method of painting. Holding tho brush' in his mouth, 'the artist's first picture was' a scene of Lako Ada, Milford' Sounds. During tho ovening. session lie made a .big hit by painting from' memory a landscape upside down, and when finished, on turning it to its right position, he was rewarded b,v a.hearty round of applause.
On glancing round tho gallery, ono is struck by the wonderful variety of subjects that come; from t'ia brush of this ratihor wonderful painter. Ono of his Jjost pictures 13 that of tho battleship Jfew Zealand, tho colouring in it being Very clovcr. In animals tho : artist Beems to 'excel, his dogs and horses being good. Tho picturo of a black cockatoo, is--one that might well cause envy by many artists who have tho use of both iiijms. Three fruit studios, two pigeons, rf'sprav'of poppies, tlio Austra r lian laughing jackass, and a seascape in black'and white are also worthy of mention. To-day tho artist is painting a 40in. by 24in. canvas of tho- wreck of the Da von, and 110 may bo seen at work from". 11 a.m. to > 12.30 j 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and 7.30 p.m. 1 to 10 p.m. A -modest charge', is made for ad-' tission.'^
