HERD RETURNS.

COMPETITION AT LEVIN. Somo time ago Mr. J. 6. Wilson offered tho Levin branch of tho Farmers' Union usum of £10, to bo divided into three prizes (£5, £3, and £2) for the best-kept herd return forms by farmers in the Levin district. Tho first prize was won by Miss Vera Richards, who secured a score of 99 points out of a possiblo 100. Miss S. Broadbelt was second with 87, 4nd J. Macdonald next with 75. The three winning returns, neatly framed, were exhibited at tho Levin Flower Show on Wednesday,- aiid were inspected with interest. Theso returns showed tho number of cows milked in each liord, particulars of cow's age, breeding and colour, with tho weight and test of each day's milking for a year, all set out clearly in tabulated form. All tho Returns wero kept excellently, but Miss llichards's paper was on object-lesson in lieatncsa and correctness. Doubtless tho interest created by this competition will induce many farmers to take the trouble to havo careful records, kept of their cows, which must prove invaluable to the farmers.
