DAVEY CARS.
POSITION IN WELLINGTON.
In connection with tho recent fatal accident to a tramway conductor through a' fall from a side-step combination car, it is interesting to note that nine of the city cars have been altered as required by the Davey clause in the last amendment of the Tramways Act. In other words, they have been furnished with a central passage from end to end. The altered cars comprise seven of the combination typo and two' cf the palace type. The alteration of thij combination cars .is a fairly simple matter, and the authorities are hastening the work so far as these are concerned, but difficulties stand in the way of,dealing effectively with the palace cars, and tho question; of a satisfactory scheme for their conversion is still under consideration. ,In complying with the requirements of. the Act, tho City Council incurs a serious first cost for the actual alterations and a consequential loss of earning' power through a much-reduced accommodation. ' The District Council of the United Labour i Party has passed a resolution protesting against the _ delay of the tramway authorities in 'giving effect to the law in regard to the alteration of the cars. Since the Act was passed providing for 'the centre passage -in, all cars, several accidonts nave occurred, and Mr. M. J. Reardon stated yesterday, in explanation of the resolution, that workers have expressed the opinion that tho alterations could be carried out more speedily than they are being carried out.
