•HALF 'A' MIMON STERLING 'A YEAR As indication of the importance of roads and of. the large sum' expended in their construction and upkeep is given ,in a return presented 'to tfie House of Representatives yesterday, on the motion of Mr, J. 0. The grand total allocated for all descriptions of roads waß £1,070,958, of which £471,501 was spent. _ The amounts voted and spent in the different classes are shown as follows, the expenditure being placed in parentheses i Road votes, £529,500 (£209,137); backblock roads, £301,575 (£128,448) j Toads on goldfields, £74,416 (£36,761); opening up Crown lands, £100,000 (£47,951); National Endowment Account, £19,200 (£2689); maintenance, £42,000 '(£42,248); Lands' for Settlement Account, £4267 (£4267). The principal districts faTed as follows, the expenditure again being given in parentheses:—Auckland, £193,279 (£73,576); Wellington, £61,201 (£18,631); Christchurch, £28,693 (£16,522) j Dunedin, £53,070 (£14,270); Gishorne, £94,957 (£49,371);.
