At the council meeting last evening a roquest was received from St. Joseph's Orphanage, asking, for permission to tako up a collection at a band performance at Newtown Park on Sunday.
Councillor Frost (chairman of tho Reserves Committee) said that thero had been continuous complaints about the number of collections taken up at Newtown Park and the Basin Reserve, and the committee had decidod to refuse permission in thiß aB it was not a local institution
Councillor Fitzgerald was surprised to hear the chairman of the Reserves Committee say that St. Joseph's Orphanago was not a local institution; as anybody with the least knowledge of Wellington know th.it it was supported and maintained by local people. It was situated at Lower Hutt only because of tho cheapness of tho land. Ho hoped tho chairman would allow tbo matter to be referred back. . •_ - Councillor Frost replied that peoplo wore being absolutely pestered by continual collection boxes. Tho Mayor remarked that that matter could be dealt' with by the Reserves Committee, with power to act, and this was agreed to.
