WORK TOO ARDUOUS.

TROUBLE OVER OIL CARGO,

Auckland, September 18. Work in connection with the discharge of tho oil cargo of tho steamer Capo Breton ceased suddenly at 2.30 p.m., owing to a demand mado by tho store hands for increased wages. Tho steamer arrived at Auckland with 47,000 cases of mineral oil for tho Vacuum Oil Propretary, and, on Friday, dischargo was besun. According to tho custom of tho company, 20 casual labourers wero engaged to unload tho cases. When they arrived in Freeman's Bay everything went smoothly until the afternoon, and about 4000 cases had been discharged, leaving only 700 odd in'tho ship. At about 2.30 p.m. 20 stero hands interviewed tho manner of tho Vacuum Oil Company, stating that thoy considered that tho work of unloading tho cases was too arduous. They accordingly demanded payment at the rato of 2s. per hour, an increase of 6d. on the remuneration which thoy wero receiving. ■ In tho event of a refusal thoy threatened to stop work. Tho refusal eamCj however, and the men left tho store.

Tlio Vncuum Proprietary possess largo stores at Wellington, as well a3 in Auckland, and it was decided to send the remaining 700 cases south. Tlio Cairo Breton will accordingly leave for Wellington.

A representative of "tlio company stated that, at times, the work was hard, but not extraordinarily so. The carts had to bo unloaded as they camo in, and sometimes they came in a procession. On tlio other hand, ' there we.ru particularly slack tames, when there was not so much work to do. Tho men recoived Is. 6d. per hour, as against Is. od. paid for tho work on tho wharf.
