LIFE-SAVING.

MARANUI CLUB'S REPORT,

The second annual report of the Maranui Surf and Life-Saving Club mentions general progress, and goes on to state that the opening of. the club's now club rooms look place "on December 9 in the .presenco of about 700 people.' "From a surf bather's point of' view-,", continies the .report,. "tho summer was a disappointing ono. The Water was never really warn, and a weok-end without rain or wind was almost a unique experience." On two occasions the club's squads were ablo to avert drowning accidents. On February 2 Mr. R. T. Evans was rescued in a heavy southerly swell, and on February 15 Mr. H. M'Gregor was brought to safety under similar circumstances. The metnods of resuscitation taught by the Royal Life-Saving Society received a thorough test on both occasions. The executive oxpresses gratification at the success of tho club's candidates for tho\ awards of the Royal Life-Saving Society. During the year proficiency certificates and bronze medallions wero awarded to Daisy Bolton, James H. Kober, H. Morris:, E. H. Livermore, Emilo J. Deslandes, H. J. Austin, R. L. Cunliffo, Elsie R. Smith, E. M. Minifie, L. H. Robortson, S. Ashton,A. H. Dawson, G. H. Skilton, and L. T. Wilson. Honorary instructors' certificates were awarded to Garland 0. Morgan and Rupert C. Woods. Winners of awards of merit , wero Wm. H. Ellis, J. H. Kober, E. M. Minifio, Emilo J. Deslandes, A. 11. Dawson, H. J. Austin, and R. L. Cunliffo. The total number of awards no>v held by club members is 90, as against 53 for tho 1911-12 season. Mr. G; 0. Morgan is tho winner of Mr. C. G. Hedge's trophy for the best week-end attendance at the club's rooms—2l4} hours Of tho ladies' branch, Mrs. E. A. Orsborn has been the best attonder—lo4J hours. Tho report also draws attention to the fact that on almost every day during the whole season there was a life-saving squad of club members on tho beach ready for emergencies. Tho City Council have advised tho club that tney intend installing electric light in the club rooms. The club's library contains 104 books, and the thanks of tho club are due to Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Moran, Councillor Tregear, and Messrs. J. B. O'Neill and WH. Ellis and others for donations of books. The actual financial membership of the club' is 132, of whom 38 are ladies. At a special meeting held in February last it was decided to issue 40 debentures of £1 each, carrying interest at tho rato of 5 per cent, per annum, payable yearly. Twenty-two of these debentures havo been issued. This operation is in connection with a liability of £15 incurred in building the club rooms.
