PETONE AFFAIRS
The Works Committee of tho Pctono Borough Council met on Friday' night. There wcro presont tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) and Councillors Trueman, Townsend, Findlay, Cox, and List. Tho sowage engineor (Mr. 11. Fox) reported that in tlio construction of the outfall from the septic tank progress was necessarily slow, as tho laying of the pipes could only he carried out during lioap tides. Tho manhole sewors and tho receiving chambers at the septic tank had boon completed. The steamoiigino used for pumping at the septic tank was practically worn out. Ho recommended the inimediato purchase of a 7; b.h.p. portablo' oii-engino l'or pumping purposes, at a cost of £150. The expenso to date of tho schenio was. £3126 19s. lOtl. Tho sowage engineer placed before tho council tlio cost of tho erection at tho soveral stations of engine, l generators, motors, pumps, ctc. Tho sanitary inspector (.Mr. W. B. Gough) reported that 505 visits of inspection had been mado throughout tho borough, and 34 written notices sent out. A. proposal mado by the borough engineer, .111 his monthly report, was to the effect that all other than purely domestic water supply bo classed as extraordinary, and bo chargod through meter, those classed as extraordinary to ba enumerated as follows; —Three laundries, two cordial factories, three clubs, two churches, two fish shops, one browcry, tlio bars of tho hotels, the railway station, tho bowling green, cooperage, dye works, soap works, and largo stables. The report brought down by the engineer contains somo interesting information on tho subject, which showed that experience all ovor tlio world proves that by metering supplies wasto is prevented and 60 per cent, of saving effected. Meters can be lauded and installed at about £3 each, and would save the necessity of in future increasing the storago capacity and enlarging the delivery 'main. Councillors favoured the idea, and Councillor Townsend moved that those mentioned by the engineer, along with those whose properties aro exempt from rates, bo orderod to install motors. The motion was carricd, while tho engineer was asked to further report on tho matter. Ill'accordance with a motion, passed on Councillor Townsend's initiative by the Potone Borough Council somo months ago, the Borough Engineer (Mr. A. Cowie) brought down 'a report at Friday's meeting of the-council 011 tlio lighting of Korokoro. Tho engineer submitted three proposals, as follow: — (1) By generating electricity near the centre of the district by means of an oil-engine. This would entail an attendant for at least four hours • per night, which could not be set down at less than £00 per annum, and, added to tho charge 011 a capital outlay of about £800, would render this scheme impracticable. (2) By ninnuig a cablo from tho sowago powor-station to a sub-station at tlio junction of tho Korokoro and Domain to a motor generator, tho power supplied being chargod through meter at, say, 7d. per unit. The cost of this method he estimated at £1050, tho annual charges being £104 55., and tho revenue derived from 25 lamps burning four hours per night would bo about £32, leaving a deficiency of £72 ss. per annum. (3) By generating the electricity by water power from the Korokoro Stream. He was not yet able to formulate any estimate of the cost. Councillor Townsend disagroed with the figures brought down, and Councillor Cox then moved that the gas manager bo asked to bring down a report 011 tlio matter in somo j months' time. To this tho Mayor addr cd that the Borough Engineor bo also asked to roporc as to Clause 3. The motion was carricd. ,
