"Times"—Sydney "Sun" Special Cables. • , London, September 13. At the meeting of tho British Association, Dr. M'Dougall, of Oxford, submitted a now theory of laughter. Ho argued that laughter, primarily, was fundamentally an antidoto of Bympathy. Sympathetic tendencies wero of tho first importance, for social lifo would be at a serious disad/antage if each man had to sillier all those minor pains from which his fellows ailed. The cumulative effect of many slight pains would seriously lower vitality, and hence social habits required an antidote or preventive for, these sympathetic pains. Nature, therefore, had orcatcd laughter a3 a protective reaction against them. THE AUSTRALIAN CONGRESS. (Reo. September 14, 5.5 p.m.) London, September 14.
