' The steamer Wanaka, which arrived from Timaru on Saturday afternoon, encountered a terrific north-westerly gale off Cape Palliser on Thursday morning, the sea running mountains high. A huge wavo broke on board amidships at 6 a.m., wrecking the bridge ventilators, smashing No. 4 lifeboat, 'and carrying, away the vegetable locker. Tho sea. stove in the wheel-bouse door, and shifted the lifeboats out of the chocks on the port side. '
