4 •FALL OFF THE FOOTBOARD. A tram-conductor, named _ Frank Breeden, 24 years of ago. of 285 Mansfield Street, mot his death by falling-off tho footboard of a car on Saturday night, though exactly hbw the accident occurred no sightseer can describo. Deceased, who was a native of Now South Wales, his parents residing at limg Street, Rochdale, Sydney, and who was engaged to bo married to a young lady in Wellington, was conductor on No. 17 combination car, which was on the Oriental Bay route. The car was returning from tho Oriental Bay torminus about ten o'clock on, Saturday night, and according to ; the statement of tho motorman, W. J.' Hilder, was proceeding at about fourteen miles an hour between Jerninghain Point and Hay Street, when he heard a sound as of money falling on tho road. He immediately stopped the car, and ; looking back, saw the conductor lying full length about three cars' lengths in the rear. With the assistance of a passenger named Mr. P. C. Tito, who is employed by Mr. deceased was removed in an unconscious condition to tho house of Mr. Donnelly, where ho was attended to by Dr. Young, .who ordered his removal to. the Hospital. Deceased was taken there by Tramway Inspector Dunn anti others, suffering from fraoture of . the skull and haemorrhage of tho brain. He lingered until 2.30 yesterday morning, at which hour he died from haemorrhage end concussion. There were four _or five passengers in the car at the time of the accident, but only, two, Mr. Durrent, of Tapiri Street, Kilbirnie, and Mr. Tito, saw. it occur. 'The conductor was standing on the footboard outside the car, and lost his hold of the handle in passing from one compartment to the other. . An inquest is to be heJd at 2.30 on Wednesday after noon.
