CHARITY CUP SEMI-FINALS. HOSPITAL AND Y.M.C.A. WIN. Next Saturday will see the curtain rung down on senior Association football in Wellington for season 1913. The semi-finals for the Charity Cup were played on Saturday afternoon botween Hospital and Swifts and Y.M.C.A. and St. John's. Both matches proved interesting, tlio match on tho Basin Reserve attracting an estimated crowd of 1000 spectators. At the conclusion of well-fought games it was found that Hospital and Y.M.C.A.—two very good teams—will fight out tho final match for the cup next Saturday. Following are tho scores and details of the matches: — Hospital ... 2 Swifts 0 Y.M.C.A. ... 2 St. John's ... 0 HOSPITAL AND SWIFTS. Good football was witnessed in tho match Hospital v. Swifts on the Basin Roservo, the' men from Porirua .wero returnod victors by 2 goals to nil. Hospital fully deserved their win, because they played much tho better gamo. Swifts, on tho other hand, were not the Swifts seen in by-gono days, although at times their old dash was in evidence. Hospital played with bettor combination than their opponents all through the match. Their two fullbacks wero in excellent form, and placed the ball well. For a long timo Roots, centre-half, was not seep to advantage, but towards the end ho was at his best. Tho passing between . the suburban men's forwards was good, and it was this combined play that won them the match. Swifts wero good in individual efforts, but in comparison with their opponents they appeared to havo lacked training. As a matter of fact the game appeared to be won in tho first spell, although at half-time there was no score on either side. Tho men from the. country made the pace a hot one from the outset, and during the second spell this told against Swifts. In the first half of the gamo Swifts looked like scoring on two or three occasions. On the other hand Hospital gave Penlinjrton (Swifts' goalkeeper) several anxious moments. Tho first score of tho match came when tho second spell was well advanced.' Hospital forwards worked play from ono end of the field to the other. Here Roots secured and passed nicely'from-the right to Skinner. The latter landed a beautiful goal in the corner of tho net, and gave Penlington no chance. This reverse appeared to put new life into Swifts for a while, and they tried hard to score. Cobb was called upon to save his side on two or three occasions, and he did it well. Hospital wero not to be beaten, however, and tbo final goal of the match waa scored in a characteristic manner by Hughes, oentro-forward. Penlington made a determined effort to save, but tho ball beat him and went over the line. Mr. A. F. Nowbold was refcreo. Y.M.C.A. & ST. JOHN'S. A strenuous, ovenly-contested struggle took place at Kolburne Park between Y.M.C.A. and St. John's. There were fow spectators, but what few there wore, were rewarded with a garao full' of exciting incidents, brilliant rushes, determined attacks and sharp repulses. From the kick-off tho bnll was passed to tho Y.M.C.A. right wing, and carried down tho fiold by tho forwards. Baker on the Y.M.C.A. left wing, was given opportunity aftor opportunity, of scoring, but was generally robbed of tho ball by his superior opponent on tho wing, or lost it through his own carelossncss. From a throw-in, however, ho got tho ball, and with rather unusual judgment, centred. Wilson (half-back) received and carried tlio ball right to tlio goal-mouth wliero ho passed to Phillips who neatly headed it through. Y.M.C.A,, 1; St. XjJohn's,' 0. Timo and timo RSWgt
Y.M.C.A. hurled themselves against tho enemy, and time and time again camo < within ail aco of scoring. Carruthers ] gob in a favourablo position and shot. 1 The ball missed the goal bar by a hand's i breadth. Another was saved by Walls, i tho goal-keeper, just tipping it round : tho comer. At length liaker got his ] chance, and with more luck than,judg- i ment, got tho ball bctwoen tho posts, Walls missing badly. Y.M.C.A., 2; St. | John's, 0. Half-time found tho scores unchanged. St. John's played a man I short in tho second halt, Parsons .being incapacitated. In spite of tliis sorious loss, however, they played bril- ! liantly, but the scores remained unaHorod.— Y.M.C.A., 2; St. John's, 0. Mr. Lithgow was referee. OTHER MATCHES.
