DETAILS OF THE PLAY. The Australians reoeived a warm welcome from the crowd when they appeared. New Zealand won tho toss, and after play in mid-field Tasker broke through the ruck, following a line-out, but the 'New Zealand backs nipped the effort in the bud and sent the oall out. Near half-way. Spillane broke away, but was called back for a knock-on and . Australia got the ball in tho scrum, but Taylor was round on Wood before he'could get the ball away. Austra-lia-was forced from a long kick. From tho ensuing play New Zealand attacked and Australia were penalised for taking tho ball out of the scrum. O'Leary's kick fell short. Now Zealand returned to tho attack, and Simpson was obligr ed to force down. Frqm the kick-out a line-out took place on the New Zealand side of half-way. and 'Ranji" Wilson broke away with the ball at his toe, but the -effort was shortlived; Brown set the New Zealand backs going, but Spillane gave a pass off-side. Somo Nippy' Passing. The visiting backs indulged in some nippy passing and ran to the line where" New Zealand was awarded a' free kickfor handling tho ball in the scrum, and from a scrum inside half-way Wood sent the ball out cleanly to his backs, but Taylor smothered Tasker's pass. Australia were penalised for Joff-side play and New Zealand found the line at half-way. The visitors so far were having the better of tho play. Macky missed his kick and one of the Australian forwards securing possession, flung wide to Tasker, who cut-in very nicely, but Jones waß tackled with tho ball and M'Neece and Wilson rushed the play to Australia's quarters. Carr sent his forwards back to tho New Zealand end of the field, but Stewart marked and shifted play to half-way. The visiting pack were playing with fine dash and rushed play back into New Zealand's twenty-five, but a mark again relieved. Australia Draws First Blood. - -New Zealand were penalised for lifting a foot in the scrum and from the ensuipg play Carr centred and Wood, securing posEeSsiop, transferred to Tasker, who cut-in and passed to Suttor, who dashed- over tho line and scored sixteen minutes after. the commencement of play. The kick failed. • The kick-out saw play on Australia's side of half-way wliere, after a couple of scrums Taylor got off-side, but Wogan failed to gain any ground with his kick. Macky marked and with a fine kick O'Leary found touch inside Australia's twonty-fivo, and from' tho lineout the visitors wcro forced. Play so far had beon fast, but not brilliant and tho visitors had snown to bettor advantage than the "All Blacks." They wero getting tho ball in tho scrums and their backs were playing more brightly and with greater combination. Play hung at half-way for some minutes "&nd thon Tasker missed a high ■ centring kick from Macky and after a scrimmage Australia wero penalised for hanging on to tho ball.. Spillane failed to kick a goal. Soveral times Brown set the Black .backs going from near tho balf-way mark, .but never to any purpose, the tackling of the Australian backs being sure and unhesitating. Aus-1 tralia wero again penalised for hanging on to the ball and O'Leary found tho lino with a splendid kick. _ Tho . Australian forwards broke: away in a loose rush from the line-out and Tasker, getting the ball from one of tho forwards, cut-in neatly, but lost possession. . A Croat Potted Coal. A spell of line-kicking saw play near Australia's lino and once the Now Zealand forwards looked liko scoring with a pell-mell rush. Tho visitors effected a'savo, however, and then tho unexpected happened. O'Leary took tho ball just inside half-way and potted a magnificent goal to the .delight of the orowd. Tno score now .stood: New Zealand, i points; Australia,' 3 points. Now Zealand wero penalised for lianpjnn'.on to the ball, but Simpson's kick, though a Btrong one, failed to register, a "oal. From a scrum at half-way Brown started tho Black backs going, but Stewart failed to talw his pass. Tho Black forwards took tip the running and Stewart securing again from the loose cut-in and passed to Brown who throw on to Wilson, enabling tho Wellington forward to gallop across and touch down behind tho-posts. O'Leary concerted. Now Zealand, 9; Australia, 3.
The Blue forwards, headed by Cody, took play to New Zealand's twenty-five where, from a line-out Hasell broke # away practically unsupported. Play returned to Now Zeanand territory where Wood secured and, passed in to Fahoy who beat his man and threw in to Jones, but the last-named hung on too long .and O'Leary effected a brilliant Bave, finding the lino well down the field. . Australia Evens the Score up. Play returned to Australian territory but the visiting forwards, playing with great dash, returned to the attack and at the instance of Suttor, who gained a good deal of ground with a long kick, Wogan and O'Leary had a race for the ball, and both over-running it, , Jones came up behind, picked it up and dived over tie line. The try was converted, making the scores: New Zealand 0 points. . Australia ' 8 pointß. ... THE BECOND SPELL. Immediately after the kick-off in the second spoil, the visitors' full-back was penalised for illegal tackling, and the visitors were forced. Tho Australian backs indulged hi some passing, but- Tasker was called back for a forward pass just when things wero looking bad for tho Blacks. Then Wilson and Taylor broke away in a fine piece of' loose dribbling, and after a warm meleo on tho line, Taylor dropped over the line, after four minutes' play. O'Leary converted with a magnificent kick. New Zealand, 14; Australia, 8. Good line-kicking on tho part of the visiting backs saw play in the Blacks' quarter, where Jones cut-in from a scramble and scored,a clover try. Simpson converted. New Zealand, 14. Aus-' tralia, 13.. The kick-out saw pla.y at half-way for a ■ moment and then play was suspended owing to a slight injury to M'Donnoll, one of tho Australian, scrummors. Tho resumption saw the Blacks attacking until Jonos Btopperi them. A couple of line-outs and then a free kick was given for obstructing, but O'Leary failed to increase the New Zealand score. New Zealand Force the Paoo. The Black forwards were now showing "to better advantage and were penning tho visitors on their own line. Finally, from a scrum, Brown went on . his own and scored in a-good position. O'Leary added the major points. New Zealand, 19; Australia, 13. The visitors attacked, but O'Leary rushed into the thick- of it and effected a save. Brown broko away from a sfirum, but after beating. Tasker, was pulled down by Wood, who was playing a rattling game at half-back. A moment later Brown broke through again and passed to Hasel, who dropped over amidst enthusiasm. O'Leary failed with tho kick. New Zealand, 22; Australia, 13. The Australian defence was weakening and from a line-out tho Blacks rushed play to Australia's line where Wpgan saved. Good line-kicking again put New Zealand on the attack and from a scrum near the lino the ball was kicked over .the line and in a race for possession Cummings beat Carr and touched down. • O'Leary's kick was spoilt by the wind. New Zealand, 25; Australia, 13. The New Zealand backs attacked brightl.y again and were within an ace of scoring.
