NELSON NOTES.

A serious fire occurred near Canvastown at an early hour on Friday morning, when tho wholo of Mr F. Smart's sawmill was totally destroyed. Mr. J'. Smart, who was awakened bv the glare in tlio window, roused all hands, but tho fire had such a hold that it was Impossible to save anything. Tho firo was supposed to havo originated in tho chaff-house, where tliero was a cask of oil, which, on becoming ignited, threw tho flamo right through the building. Mr. Smart lost everything, and estimates his loss at a very considerable amount, as there was no insurance. Mr. Holland, tho engineer, is also a heavy loser through losing a very valuable sot of tools of all sorts. Mr. Smart lias decided, to rebuild at once.
