There were good fields though tho scratchings were rather more numerous than usual nnd the entrants included soino New Zealand Cup aspirants. Though the attendanco was not affccted by tlie rudeness of the elements the licensed booth (opened for tho first timo in eleven years) had its trade much restricted thereby. Tho weather could hardly havo been, worse'for tho opening day of',tho Ashburton meeting. Snow and hail fell at intervals throughout tho afternoon, and tho courso becamo .very heavy. Despite tho conditions,'tlie attendance was very large, and tho special train from Christchurch was crowded. Several Now Zealand Cup -candidates were seen under silk, but none of tliom showed up in an attractivo light.' The greatest failure of the day \va£ Somniform, and it is difficult to imagine that sho is a full sister to Bon Reve. Though sho fell, she was hopelessly beaten at tho time, and could not go with the field. ' Owing to Mr. R. O. Duncan having to fulfil his position as stipendiary, tho judge's box. was occupied by Mr. J. E. Henrys. Coronetted was allowed to pay ( a falso price in'the Hurdles. Ho looked fresh and well, and his enlarged knee was much reduced. T.- Humphries, who rodo him, always hadj him on tho fence in •front, and at the six furlongs ho ran away and left tha others standing. Umeraboy finished up well and beat tho tiring Terry Flynn for second j>lace. Overton was a poor fourth. Tho winner was lecently purchased for £120, and Le looks' liko turning out a raro bargain. There' was a big field in tho Trial Plate, and tho public made a hot favourite of Jeannot, a fine big upstanding full brother to. Jan. Formal, a full sister to Specialform, began very smartly, buf was sooii joined by the. Birkenhead mare, Miss Kolmar, and tho others wero led by Jeannot and Sauci. At tho bottom of tho straight Formal had a big lead, but Jeannot stuck to his task well, and got up in tho last few strides. Counsel, who had been tho Inst to leav'o the mark, and then fan very wido at tho turn,. was third, and then came Forest Belle and Sauci, who were close up. Tho latter blow very hard on pulling up, and is evidently not ready yet. Tho placed horses should all win races. Serious disaster overtook backers in tho Welter, in whiph Somnifonn started a screaming favourite. At the start ho jumped out slowly and was soon sent to the rear. At tho end of a furlong Deeley was riding him hard, but ho was ■unable to niako up any leeway. Entering the straight Britain's Crown led a bunched field, and then Waitoto crossed his logs and came 'down, tho favourite falling over him. Deeley sustained a broken wrist, and will bo oiit of tho saddlo for some weeks. Britain's Crown won comfortably from Flora M'Donald, with Medallist close up. The betting was fairly even in the big race, Martel, Ladrone, Thrax, and Cornet being well Jbacked. Martel jumped out in front, but was soon joined by Ladrono and Mumura, witli the two top weights next. Martel led into tho straight, but Ladrono always had his measuro, and, coming on full of running, ho won easily from Tho Cornet and Thrax. , Martel was a poor fourth. Tlio winner has the reputation of being unreliable, but ho -galloped well for tho stable lad who rode him. Thrax looked well, but ho could not act in the mud. Public form pointed to Golden Morn as tho best of the hack field, but it was expected that tlio mud would find her out, and Speedometer and Whizz wero both better preferred on tlio machine. At tho rise of the barrier Speedometer and Aerial went off at a great bat, with Golden Morn in third place, and tho others strong out. Halfway down the running the last-named camo through and won in a canter. Gjinilash came from a long way back, and got second money. Joan was thif'd and May Dalrymple fourth. Tlio winner was neglected on tho machine. * The trot was a good thing for Qninccy Maid, who, after allowing Lyndhurst to make tho running into tho straight, then camo on and won nicely. Lyndhurst broke badly at the distance, and ; Alice Huon got up and beat him for second place. The snow was falling heavily when the concluding event' camo on for decision. Oxenhope, Stepmaid, and Naumai worn withdrawn, and Mr. W. H. Thomson's pair, Pilgrim's Way and | Carolus, wero each heavily backed. Sea King, who always shows his best form on this course, jumped out in front, and led the-whole way, Teviotdale was second and Specialform, who finish-, i ed fast, third. i
