THE LABOUR PARTY
RETAINS DISTINCT IDENTITY. Hie attitude of the Labour party towards tlie appointment of Sir Joseph Ward as Leader of the Opposition was summarised last night in an interview by Mr. J. Robortson (Otaki). "Tlio position of the' Labour party," said Mr. Robertson,' "is that wo still retain, a distinct identity, apart. from any other parts of tlio House, whilst wo aro prepared, of course, to co-operato with tlio Liberal'party in matters whero wo find our interests aro identical, that is all we aro procured to say. This means that wo would not for mere party purposes ' oppose mea suros which the Government may bring down, but that wo aro prepared to /support such measures as aro in accord witli the Labour party's .platform. I think tho. ap]X)intment of Sir Joseph Ward more clearly defines the' position',in, politics, and that it will certainly' facilitate tho work of all tho parties in tho House. We recognise, the Labour member added, "that Sir Joseph Ward..is a strongman, who will bo able to "lead a ' united party." .
