A LOAN BILL.
ONE MILLION AND THREEQUARTERS. A million and three-quarters is the amount of a loan which tho Government seeks authority to raise in a Bill brought down in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. Tho Hill is entitled tho Aid to Public Works and Land Settlement Act.
Under the provisions tlio Minister seeks power to raise a sum not exceeding £1,750,000. Hie sums- so raised are to, bear intorest at not more thau 4j per cent, per annum. The sc'hedulo to tlio Bill gives tho following appropriations:—Railways: Construction, £600,000; additional rollingstock for open lines, and such other works and purposes in connection therewith as may bo authorised, £500,000. Iu respect of land settlement and goldfields development; the construction of roads, tracks, and bridges for tlio purpose or opening up back-blocks developing goldfields and supli other works and purposes in connection therewith as may be authorised, £500,000; in, respect of other public works, £150,000; total, £1,750,000.
