(From Oar Special Oorroapontent.) . 4 ' A meeting of those interested in celebrating Labour Day in Petouo was held last evening. A committee was set up to malio tlio necessary arrangements, Mr. E. Whittaker being appointed chairman, Mr. J. Howies secretary, and Mr. R. Cunlilfo treasurer. ■ Members of tlio l'ctono Football Club assembled last night to give a send-olf to J. M'Kcnzic, who lias selected from l'ctono Club, to represent New-Zealand in tlio Calil'ornian team. Mi' George Davis presided, the usual toasts wcro honoured, and many congratulatory remarks were made regarding the esteem in which the guest was licld by the club. During tlio evening Mr. Geo. Davis/ on behalf of the club, presented Mr. M'Kenzio with a set of pipes and a suit caso, and trusted that ho would uphold the reputation of the l'ctono Club.

An entertainment was held ill the Wesley Church last night, presided over by the ltev. J. J. Lewis. Thero was a largo attendance, and tlio proceeds wera in aid of tlio piano fund. At tlio conclusion refreshments wcro lianded round and an enjoyablo evening was spent. Tliu following contributed to the programme: Mrs. Ridge, tho Misses Foster, Kirk. Lewis, Irwin, Joplin, and M'lntyro, and Messrs. Clausen, Ackroyd, llcpplestone, Millward, Medhurst, Watson, Eados, Frances, Holmes, Maiid; Bryant, and A. E. Wright. Bro. S. Taylor, 0.T., presided over tho weekly meeting of the Hope of l'ctono Lodge of Good Templars, No. 187. Bro. Robertson, who lias been on a visit to tho southern portion of tlio Dominion,' lias returned to I'etono, and is again in the ranks of 'tho Hopo of Petono Lodge. After the usual routine business had been transacted games wcro indulged in. Tlio meeting for next week is a lecture by Bro. A. B. Thomson, G.C.T. Tho meeting will also bo an open one. Tlio lodge was closed by Bro. Taylor, C.T. ... Tho by-election in connection with' tho vacancy oil tlio Upper Hutt Town Board, caused by tho. resignation of Mr. R. Quin, is creating considerable intcrost in that district. Two candidates aro already,out for tho position, namely, Messrs. A. J. M'Curdy and Will. Greig. Tlio former candidate addressed the electors last evening and tho latter is to speak to-night. Nominations close on September 22, and tho election takes placo on September 20. Recently Mr. M'Cnrdv resinned his position as Town Clerk to th< board.
