ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
HUTT SHUNTING FATALITY. PROCEEDINGS AT INQUEST. An 'inquest concerning tho deatli of Robert Arkwright, ft railway porter, as the result of injuries received at Lower Hutt on Thursday evening last, was hold before the coroner (Dr. 'Arthur, S.M. yesterday. Mr. A. E. Dawson watched proceedings oil behalf of the Railway Department, and Sergeaut Henry appeared for tho police. Wm, Oasoy, porter, at Lower Hutt, stated that on tho night of the accident ho was ongaged in shunting operations, in company with Arkwright. After thoy had seen all the passengers out of tho incoming train, Arkwright walked down to turn out tho platform lights, and witness gavo tho driver the signal to pull up at tho north end of the station. This would necessitate deceased's getting on to tho roar portion of tho train to ride out to tho box. He (Casey) was on tho front portion of 'the train. When he had cut off ho failed to get the usual signal from Arkwright, and on going "4o investigate heard deceased asking him to' hurry up as ho liad been injured. As there was no stretcher at tho station, witness and the signalman procured a laddor and a carriage cushion on which they placed tho injured man. Ho was then taken to tho porter's room. Dr. Hector was telephoned lor, and subsequently Arkwright was sent on to tho Wellington Hospital. To Sergeant Henry: Doccawd had no clear recollection as to how he got underneath the wheels. To Mr. Dawson: There could havo been no bad jolt or jar sufficient to throw Arkwright olf the train. Deceased had lioen assisting in this brauch ot work merely to gam experience. Medical evidence was to tho elect that death had been tho result of stock, following on injuries, viz., a fracture of tho left leg, and a bad fl&k wound on the right. .. ■ Tho verdict was to the effect that death was duo to shook, following on injuries accidentally received, and •that no blame was attachable to anyone. W Ross, a resident of Kilbirme, was admitted to tho Hospital last suffering from concussion of the brain the result of a fall down a flight of stairs. SON'S GALLANT EFFORT. SAD END TO A LAUNCH TRIP. (By Telegraph—Proas Association.) Auckland, September 9. Arthur Harding, son of tho late John Harding, of Mount Vernon Estate, Hawse's Bay, was drowned on Sunday afternoon in tho Oruawharo River, near Port Albert, under distressing circumstances. Deceased recently purchased several thousand acres of land having a frontage to tho Oruawharo River. Un Sunday, in company with his wife and son, he crossed tho river in an oillaunch to visit some neighbours, ino weather was stormy; but nothing, untoward happened until the return journev had nearly been completed. Ino launch had nearly reached tllo f w j? deceased's property when he fcll o eiboard. His son gallantly jumped into the water, swam some distance, ai d caught his father. He got him _ safe,\ to tho shore, but tho launch m tho meantime was drifting away with Sirs. Harding. The son then swam after the launch, and, with difSculty, in. Harding was then seen floating wards the launch, and lus wife and son caught hold of his coat, but were unable to null him on the launch, fliej toi.ed him back to the wharf, but Ha^ lul'd hy this time expired. The son is a youth 17 years of age. _ He is a powerful swimer, and was in the v, ater for about an'hour. An inquest was held yesterday, and a verdict of accidentally. drowned" waa returned. . RECENT CLIVE FATALITY. Napier, September 9. A verdict that death was due to heart failure was returned at the inquest on William Beck, who was drowned at Clive. Deceased overbalanced when pullhie a boat to tho bank of tho river and fell into tho water. When rescued hfo was extinct. BURIED BUT RESCUED. GOOD WORK BY COMRADES. Chrlstcliurch, September 9. i Three men, R. Wolf, W. M'Coy and J' Campbell, were buried by a tall of stone in the tunnel at ttio Lako Coleridge hydro-electrical works, at 10 c^clocklast night. Wolf was complete y buried. Two shifts were immediately nut on to tho work of rescue, and all the three men were got out. uninjured.
