THE WHARFMAN'S LIMIT
IN HARD WORK. THREE BAGS OP CHAFF, STRIKE IN SYDNEY. By Tsleffraph—Vrera Association—Gopyrlrll (Ree. September 9, 9.10 p.m.) t Sydnoy, September 8. 'At a recent meeting of the Wharf Labourers' Union it was resolved that only three bags of any material should bo carried by ono man at a timo, in hand trucks. The rule was enforced today, when tho unloading of tho Howard Smith Company's steamer Era commenced. The men, instead of carrying five baj*B of chaff, declined to carry more than threo bags. They wero thereupon ordered to knock-off. Similar trouble was .experienced on the Huddart-Parker steamer Burrumbeet. So far tho hold-up is confined to theso two steamers. The ship-owners contend that the demand to treat all bags alike is unreasonable seeing that three bags of salt weigh six hundredweight and five bags of chaff do not exceed fivo hundredweight. Tho men state that lately they have been asked to perform labour exceeding reasonable limits, and to carry bags, weighing two hundred pounds up an.incline. If they allowed five bags of chaff to be carried they would be expected to carry a similar number of bags of heavier materials.
