Tenderers havo been advised by ! tho Minister's direction by circular in tho. following terms: —"From tho beginning 'of 1914 tlio Department will bo in a- position to supply practically all materials required in tho schools for i carrying on the work of instruction in , accordance with tlio Byllabus. Tho Minister, thorcforo, prohibits teachers from', asking parents to provide any material other than that which they may reasonably be asked to purchase in order to aid their children in homo studies." - Parents will bo oxpected to provido exorcise books and noto hooks for homework ; nothing more. Tho contracts entered into for school materials inclndo 5,000,000 writing books, 250,000 pencils, 20,000 compasses, 80,000 set squares,' 40,000 packets of "plasticene," 10,000 paint boxes, 30.000 boxes mathematical instruments, 5000 boxes coloured chalks. 100,000 drawinfe books, 60,000 paper-folding books. 100.000 sheets cardboard, and 250,000 packets of foldins paper. The total expenditure will ho about £27,000, provision being made for dictionaries, histories, 1 geometry books, otc. ■
