Ho won tho Triennial Stakes at Ascbt, the Great Lancashire Breeders' Produce Stakes, and tho Criterion Stakes at Nowmarket.' FAIRPLAY IN PERMITS, (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, September 3. The Manawatu Trotting Club's annual meeting was held to-day. Tho roport stated that the credit" balance was £27 6s. 3d. The. prospect of obtaining a totnlisator permit was small, the only hopo being m the passing of legislation now framed. In roforring to this point, tho chairman (Mr. F. J. Nathan) said that the North Island, with 563,729 of a population, had eight permits, and tho Smith Island, with a population of 444,120, had 21 permits. There was only one day's trotting per 37,582 people in tho North Island, but for every 12,336 in tho South Island. Tho ditferenco was three to one. Auckland province, with 264,580 people, had live permits covering eleven'days, and tho remainder ot tho island, comprising Wellington, Hawke's Bay, and Taranaki (295,20!) people), had only tlireo permits, covering four day 3. Again Nelson, Marlborough, and Westland (80,102 people) had six permits, against five for the wholo of tho North Island. • Among the cities, Christchurch had, 17 . days, Auckland 11, Dunedin 6, and Wellington (tho second largest oity) only ono.
