A MISTAKEN RUMOUR.
* QUESTION OF OVERTIME. The following question was asked of tho Government in tho Houso of Representatives by Mr. T. M. Wilford: "Whether a circular \yas recently issued by tho Public Service Commissioners stating that no overtime would bo paid to thoso men in tlio Advances Department who were engaged in preparing tlio annual balanco and wcro working overtime ; and whether, after representations v/orei made by ttlio clerks concerned to tlio bead of the Department, tlio Public Service Commissioners wero compelled to withdraw, and did witlulrav, such circular?" The Hon. A. L. Ilerdman replied yesterday: Tlio Public Sorvico Commissioner states as follows:—"No such circular was issued. Overtime was incurred without authority. On the mattev being explained by tile (head of the Department lie was informed that the overtime nlre.idv worked, mid, if absolutely necessary, any further overtime would be paid for. The Commissioner thought, however, the staff could be so arranged as to practically do without overtime altogether. Tha permanent head 'replied that ho thought he could manage very well .without .working extra hours.
