A five-roomed house at Toi Toi, owned and occupied by J. Murphy, was, together with the contents, totally destroyed by fire on Friday morning. Tlio flames had a good hold when the outbreak was discovered, and the building was demolished before any of the furniture could bo Bai-ed. It is understood that the house was insured, bnt details are not availablo.
Tho death occurred at Taihape on Saturday of Mrs. Emma Ilobinson, mother of Mr. Ellis Robinson, who has been in, business hero for several years. The deceased lady was 80 years of age, and was unable to withstand an attack of pneumonia which sho contracted a few days previous to her demise. TII6 funeral on' Sunday was largely attended. A social and dance at Utiku on Friday, in aid of tho tennis court funds, was one of the most successful yet held there, about forty couples- being in attendance. Music was supplied by Mrs. Shroud and Messrs. J. Waller, H. Dunbar, and A. J. Dawson. Extras wore played by Mrs. Allen and Messrs. H. Walker and J. Gartner. The local building trade lias been very brisk for some time past, and nine or ton residences and a brewery are at present in course of erection. Although Taihapo is now equipped with an excellent high-pressure water supply aiid electric fire alarm system, the fire insurance companies havo not yet been prevailed upon to make any reduction in tho insurance premium rates, which'are apparently based on the idea that Taihape is a long way behind the tim'es in regard to Jiro-fighting appliances. \Tlie matter was discussed at tho Borough Council meeting on Friday evening, when the following motion, proposed by Councillor Wrightson, and seconded by Councillor Wilson, was carried: "That tho town clerk instructed to write to the Underwriters' Association, asking that tho town water supply and fire-fighting equipment be inspected, with a to obtaining a reduction in premiums."
A ladies' hockey team, comprising seven Taihape school girls and four others defeated tlio Rangatua ladies team at Taihapo last week by 12 goals to nil. The Taihapo Hockey Club's team visited Mangaweka on the same day, and beat tho local team in a competition match by 4 goals to 2. _ Tlie Huia Football Club, wluoh won the premiership last year, came out on top again this season without sustaining a single reverse.
