United 1 Rovers 0 The competing teams in tho Charity Cup competition have, as a result of Saturday's matches, heon narrowed down to Swifts, St. Y.M.C.A., Brooklyn United, and Hospital, tho last-named team having a bye. _i>obody expected that Thistle, the championship winners, would receive such a drubbing as Swifts gavo them, and though tho result —4 goals to>■ one came as a surprise, it was-nevertheless well morited by Swift?, who, truo to name for once at any rate, • 'J lively exhibition of rapid football, and incidentally ' gave Thistle the shock of their lives. Tho Brooklyn UnitedRovers Tussle, replayed from last week,. 6aw the Brooklyn team win b.v ono goal. It was a slow, pale, unscientific affair, and tho solitary goal did not arxive until well on in the second spell. Y.M.C.A. AND DIAMONDS. Y.M.C.A.'s first goal, though notched Ijy Phillips, was tho result of Carrutners's efforts, who, as outsido right, was a tower of strength. _ Ferguson, for Diamonds, then scored and just before halftime Wellington kicked No. 2 for Y.M.C.A. Ferguson balanced tho scoro for Diamonds soon after the restart. Y.M.C.A., however, again scored twico before the whistle blew (Phillips and Foote). Despite the bright sun and the uncomfortably long grass, the game was quita interesting. \ Mr.. Newbold was referee.
Rovers and Brooklyn united,
The above teams met at Wakefield Park, but any hopes of a stern striiEglo, after tliei'r tie last .week were doomed to disappointment. "Wild, eirratio shooting and looso ragged- play about sum up the proceedings. Herzog rnanaficd'to.score the deciding goal, lialfway through tho second spell from a ■w'iord soramblo at tho goal-nioutli. The rest of the play was very ordinary, combination was an unknown quantity, and matters went drearily on until Mr.'F. S v M'Lean blew for time. ; . ST. JOHN'S-AND BROOKLYN, ; 1 Brooklyn were defeated by St. John's jfjy i jroals to 2. Tlio winning; team had matters practically all their own •way. Early in tho . cams Brooklyn caught St. Jotas napping, and Hill, from somo closo play was able to scoro. Shortly after this Morrison opened St. Joint's scoro, and this was followed by Wilkins. scoring for • Brooklyn. Bruce added another goal to St. John's score, and Leekoy added two moro in suc- ' cession. • SWIFTS AND THISTLE. A genuino- surprise was sprung upon tlioso few spectators at the-Basin. Heserve who came to witness the Swifts v. Thistle encountor.. The game opened tamely, .nearly all those playing giving one . the impressionof staleness. In a mix-up near tho Thistle's goal, Moo'ro kicked the ball over his own. bar. Tho referee, standing some, distance, away, gave it a goal for Swifts. This brought about B general outcry from tho onlookers, but the referee's decision remained unaltered. The second spell opened with vim, land, with a rather good run up, Thistlo secured a corner.: The outsido right took the kick, 'but tho forwards wero too slow, and Guise (Swifts) with tho ball at toe, raced down the field with Loadsman in closo pursuit. Judging . nicely, the fleet outsido half centred, nnd Mouat potted—Swifts, 2; Thistlo, nil. Gibson, for Thistle, soon: after attempted a long sliot for goal, but the tall missed by inches. From tlio goal , kick the swifts forwards got tlio ball among them and gave a rather good display of combination which resulted in Mouat again scoring—Swifts, • 3; Thistle, nil. About this time Millar, Thistle's captain,, who had been playjng full-back, went on the wing, tho wine man falling back to file vacant position. This did not improve matters, however, and, at this point, • somo rather dirty play took plaie. Tho referee was over watchful, and this .was quietly, but firmly, stopped. From, a ■ line-out Millar got away with tho ball, and with a clear field ahead, things looked interesting. From u difficult angle "ho shot, but Pcnlington, with a good save, sent tlio ball round tlie cortor of tho post. For tho ensuing 20 minutes, play, though fast, was of a Tagged description, tho kicking of both team. 1 ?, but especially tho Thistlo, beinc, to say the least, erratic. At length Swifts again camo to the fore, and combination on the part of Guise, Vessey, and Mouat resulted in a score—Swifts, '4; Thistlo, nil. Close to the final whistle. Gibson redeemed his former illjudged kicking by scoring a goad. Tlio final results wore: Swifts, 4; Thistle, 1, Mr. R. S. Lithgow was referee.
