CANTERBURY AND WAIRARAPA.
(l!y Telegraph.—Pros3 Association.) Christohurch, August 30. Tho tenth match between Canterbury and Wairarapa was played at Lancaster Park. Canterbury, by a loose rush, removed tho soeno of action to the Greens' twenty-five. Th© Green forwards secured the ball in the first two scrums, but their backs did not. appear to have a great deal of combination. Tho first score oamo after some fairly interesting play had taken place, From a scrum tho ball came out to tlio Wairarapa half who broke clear away and, being mot with very weak 'tackling, opened up a rusli that ended in C. Ross scoring. M'Kenzie failed with tho kick. Wairarapa, 3; Canterbury, 0. Tho Reds livened up after this and after a hot attack Crawshaw was tackled right on tho lino. Another attempt at passing ended disastrously, for Sicvers intercepted a pass and.kicked high past Bain. Tho ball bounced tho wrong way for' him and Canterbury had a lucky escape. A freo kick gave M'Konzio a shot at goal, but tlio kick fell short. Tho Canterbury backs were making strenuous endeavours to open up piny, but some good chances were lost. Tlio Canterbury forwards then put in a bit, of dash, but tho spoil ended without further score.
Tho second half had not gono far | wlion some dashing, fast work by tlio Wairarapa forwards kept Canterbury busy, and, but for the work of B. H. Taylor and,H. Murray, they would havo been in serious trouble. At this stag© Canterbury wero having much the better of the game, and tlio backs wero working hard, but making too many mistakes. They persisted, however, and wero at last rewarded. Somo combined work, in which Burns was most prominent, took play to tho' Green's line, whero, after a fierce struggle, Maxwell scored near the corner. Crawshaw kicked a splendid goal. Canterbury, 5; Wairarapa, 3. Canterbury wero now playing a much stronger game than their opponents, and they had another good, clianco, but E. Taylor dropped tlio ball. At this stagp there was a slight adjournment owing _ to injury to Brough, tho visitors' wing-for-ivard. When play was resumed, C. Murray and Harvey figured at tho head of a (strong rush. Tho Greens woro penalised in their twenty-five, but Crawshaw's attempt at goal was unsuccessful. Canterbury kopt up a solid attack, and at length, from a scrum, H. Murray secured possession, and passed to H. Taylor, who dashed over near tlio corner. Crawshaw's kick at goal failed. Canterbury, 8; Wairarapa, 3. This proved to be tho final effort, for though Canterbury kept up the attack, tlioy were unable to cross tho lino again. Tlio gamo ended with play in WnirnTapa's half, tlio score being: Canterbury,'B points (a goal from a try and a try); Wairarapa, 3 points (a try).
