C SOUTH AFRICAN PREFERENTIAL TARIFF. MAY BE "SCRAPPED," By Telegraph—Press (Rec. August 31, 5.5 p.m.) Caps Town, August 30. The preferential tariff in favour of Grtsat Britain is in jeopardy, and likely to bo scrapped. The Customs authorities complain that. quantities of Continental goods are being smuggled in as British. Mr. H. Burton (Minister for Railways), and Mr. A. Fischer (Minister for the Interior), who aro consulting the Imperial Government 'in IJondon regarding matters of naval policy, havo hinted that prfiferenco may possibly bo dropped. The fear is expressed in somo circles that tlto Government mako the. Navy an excuse for abolishing preference, and may then discover that tho extra Customs revenuo must bo dovoted to land defence, or other local purposes.
