PUBLIC SERVICE EXAMINATIONS.
The following circular memorandum has been issued by the Education Department :—
"Entry forms hove been received from girls who, notwithstanding tho notification of the Public Service Commissioner that tlie Public Service entrance examination is not open this year to girl Candidates, desire to take tho examination as in former years for somo extraneous purpose. Entries in these terms cannot be accepted. The only course properly open to tlioso who aro not eligible for, or do not desire employ-* mcnt in the Public Service during the' coming year, is either to take the intermediate examination in its non-competi-tivo form, with a view (if they have passed tho examination previously) to securing a better' schedule of marks than before, or to enter through tho Education Board as scholarship- candidates.
..''ln view, however, of the special circumstances of the current year, the Department is prepared (but for this' year only) to allow intermediate candidates entering on the senior free plaeo'form (form A 7) to take tho competitive papers as set for scholarship and Public Servico candidates,, provided that their election to do so is endorsed on their applications. For such candidates tliero would be no order of merit lists, but in the alphabetical list of those who qualified in the November examination in any form for senior free placos, their names would appear with some distinctive mark (i.e., asterisk or italics) of haying qualified 011 tho scholarship papers. This is. the most that can bo done at present, and is more than tho Department could see its way for various reasons to provide for in future. It should be sufficient for tho time being to meet the wishes of those who desire for somo undefined purpose to obtain a qualification of tho older "Civil Servico junior" standard without entering as Public Servico entranco or as scholarship candidates."
