BEAUTIFYING KELBURNE.

■ ♦ The Kclburno Beautifying Society is anxious to make that district more beautiful, and with that object in view an interesting ceremony of tree-planting took place on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large gathering, amongst thoso present being: Tho Hon. A. L. Herdman (Attorney-General and Minister for Justice), Mrs. Herdman, tho .Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. I'- Luke), Mr. A. W. Blair (chairman of the Kclburno Beautifying Society, and Councillors Frost (chairman of the City Council Roserves Committee), and Barber. All interested in tho cerepiony assembled in Upland Road, alongside which the trees were to bo planted, the intention being to form an avenue, which in the generations to come will he "a thing of beauty and a joy forever." At tho outset the Mayor welcomed the Attorney-General and Mrs. Herdman, whom lie asked to plant tho first tree, remarking that Mr. Herdman had always taken a great interest in tho progress of that suburb, which was in his own electoral district. Mrs. Herdman then planted tho first tree, tho completion of the ceremony being marked by cheers. Tho Hon. A. L. Herdman voiced the hope that tho tree would havo something of tho up-1 Tightness of the Kelbumo people and that it would keep as fresh and beautiful. Other trees were then planted by Mrs. Frost, littlo Miss Nell 1 Blair, Mrs. Mainland, Mrs. L. H. B. Wilson, Mrs. Atkins, tho Mayor (who planted the tree nearest tho tram station), Councillor Barber, Councillor Frost, Mrs. Redward, and Mrs. C. H. Mills. Each ceremony was greeted with cheers and the last tree having beon planted, Mr. Herdman moved a vote of thanks to tho Mayor and expressed the hope that the suburb of Kelburne would progross as time went on and tho trees grow. Mr. Blair, on behalf of tho Beautifying Society, thanked all who bad shown such an interest in tho planting, and invited the guests to partake of afternoon tea at tho kiosk.
