COLLEGE RUGBY. WELLINGTON AND WANCANUI. TWO THOUSAND PEESBNT. The annual tournament in which the &ugby teams representative of Wellington College, Wanganui College, and Christ's Col lego (Ohristchurch) tako part was commenccd on t'lie Wellington College ground yesterday, when Wellington and wanganui met. Thoro were about 2000 people present, and tho boys had the services of''Mr. L. Simpson as referee. ' „ Features of the Play. Wellington Collego won tho match in tho last stages by sticking to au uphill task splendidly. Early in tho second bpell they were ten points down, and halfway through the spell they had not opened their account: Wanganui's backs were the heavier, but their forwards appeared to be lighter than t'he Blacks. The Wanganui three-quarter line was the finest combination in the match— Lala, Humpnries, and Cowper—fleet, powerful; and clever. The Wanganui second five-eighth was tho failure, of the team. His imagined proprietary interest in the leather robbed Wanganui of a couple of tries, and, besides, he was frequently beaten by Hindmarsh, who marked, him with outstanding success. However, this same five-eighth made the excellent opening from which came Wanganui's first try. The Wellington forwards played ivithgreat grit and beat the White pack decisively, thougli they had to fight hard for the upper hand. The midget of the team, half-back Brierley, covered himself with glory. Ho played excellently' throughout, and scored two fino tries. Hindmarsh, Wellington's outside five-eighth, was elever all through. He made the oponing from which the Blacks' first try camo, made numerous other clever attempts to open ■the way to the line, his kicking was good and profitable, and his spoiling work was very effective. However, no player on the field was up to the standard of Humpliries, the Wanganui centre threequarter. Of tho'two visiting wing threequarters, it is a'pity that Lala pot not a single chance in the game. Cowper strove desperately to mako. chances, and simply mowed down Blacks in his efforts, but had little success. Details of the Play. Wanganui's-first try was obtained eariy in tho oponing spell. Tho half pot the ball from a scrum, and a beautiful passing attack was concluded by Humphries, who raced over in a good position. Humphries goaled. The spoil ended without further score. Wellington, 5; .Wanganui, 0. The second spell was opened with' a sensational run by Humphries, who eluded and outpaced the whole Wellington team in a magnificent gallop from halfway,, and scored under tho posts. Again ho goaled. Wanganui,, 10; Wellington, 0. Wellington attacked for a considerable time, and Brierley made.i several excellent efforts to get in on the blind' side. . It was not till' after ' tho match appeared to be lost to Wellington that the game littlo half shot across lone-handed. Wanganui, 10; Wellington, 3. Still nearer tho end, Hindmarsh made a great oponing, And Harris got' in near tho corner. Hindmarsh converted with a magnificeint kick. Wanganui, 10; Wellington, 8. A feiv minutes later Brierley scored a brilliant try, and just before the conclusion of the match Hindmarsh kicked a great goal from just on halfway. And so.the plucky Black') pulled the game out of .the fire, and to the tune of cheer upon cheer left tho field victorious by 14 to 10. The tourney ..will b9 i .contipued.,on Sat tirday and Monday,, ' :
