Hawker pressed his foot on tho rudder valve, but his boot, being oily, slipped off, and tho machine fell ono hundred feet into tho sea. Hawker was not injured, but Kau-. pert, liis mechanician, sustained a broken arm. Coastguards rescued the men, and convoyed them to shore, where thoy rcceivod medical attention-. The raco against time created intense interest in Britain. Hawker c.overed 1043 miles in 1260 minutes. !
