PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY.
. — p- - A meeting of the Philosophical Society was lielu on Wednesday, Professor T. H.' Easterfield presiding. Two" interesting papers, were read, ono by Mr. F.- G. A. Studsey,' M.A., giving a description of a'collection of actinians from the liermadec .Islands, and the second one by .Dr. J. Allan Thompson and Mr. C. A. Cotton,-M.Sc., dealing with controversal points in the geology of marginal rocks of the East Coast of New Zealand. . This latter lecturo was illustrated by excellent, lantern slides. Mr. J. A. Bartrum, M.Se.,'read an interesting paper on ' "Some Intrusive Rocks from Westport." Owing to the lateness of the hour a number of other papers had to be held overfor a future meeting. The president made a number of remarks on the New Science and Arts Bill which has just been circulated. The Bill has certain provisions in it affecting the New' Zealand Institute,-arid the president announced that a meeting of the Council would bo called at an early date to discuss the provisions of the Bill. He also, mentioned that evidence would probably be given before .the Select' Committee of the House on the Bill. • Five new members were elected.
