WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY.
JUTES AND RESTRICTIONS. The Postmaster-GenwaJ stated l , in reply to Mr. Voitcli in the House of Representatives yesterday, that it was not proposed to reduce the charges for wireless messages from or to vessels navigating to places beyond New Zealand waters. Inquiry would', however, be made to ascertain whether it was practicable to reduce charges for telegrams originating on or being forwarded! to ships while they were navigating between ports of the mainland of the Dominion. It was necessary to confer with the wireless companies in the matter, and this would be done. Tho charge for. tho words, "Radio, Wellington," was only 10d., not lOd, per word. This charge was levied in accordance with the International, Convention, audi applied not only to senders outside of Wellington, but to thoso outside of Awanui, Auckland, Awarua, and Chathams, as it was necessary for tlie publiq to iudicato from which coast-station they wished their messago transmitted l .
Regarding restrictions on tho private use of wireless, Mr. Rhodes said that lio hindrance was placed by his Department in the way of high and technical schools teaching wireless telegraphy, provided that outside "aerials" were not erected.. In some cases such schools had) applied for jjenni'ssion to carry out instruction in wireless telegraphy, and it had been granted subjcct to the installation! of such apparatus indoors as would not intorfero with public correspondence between coast-stations and ships at sea.
