TOUR OF THE BLUES. THE TARANAKI MEN DEFEATED. (Br T»l«erM)h.—Prcoo Association.) Hawera, August 27. In the League football match played licro to-day, Now South Wales defeated Taranaki by 16' points to 5. Ovcr 1000 spectators were present. Taranaki put up a good fight, and would havo scored more points if t!hey had not been. _so eager. Some little time after starring S. Deane romped homo unopposed. New South Wales 3—o. I'lay was then oven for somo time, and the Taranaki tackling roused the enthusiasm of the crowd. Naylor eventually started a pretty rush for New South Wales, and thei ball went from Naylor to 0. Deane, to S. Deane, to Horder, who was, however, grassed. Some give-and-take play of a rather strenuous End followed, and at length Taranaki were awarded a free-kick, and Hooker kicked a good goal. New South Wales, 3; Taranaki, 2. New South Wales now attacked, and after a pretty passing rush; in which all the backs took part, S. Deane grounded the leather behind the posts, and Horder converted. New South Wales, 8; Taranaki, 2. On starting tho second spell the Blues had! tho advantago of 'the sun. From tho_ kick-off the Yellows pressed, but their efforts wero nullified by free-kicks awarded to New South Wales for infringements. Two of these saw play under Taranaki's goal posts. The Yellows now woko up, and attacked hard. Ohallis was beaten by Nicholas and King, and tlio former grounded the ball over the line. New South Wales, 8: Taranaki, 5. Osborne and Fitzgerald now headed a Taranaki rush, but wero stopped by a free-kick awarded to New South Wales. Malone mulled, and from the scrum which followed Craig was awarded a free-kick, a goal resulting. New South Wales, 10; Taranaki, 5. Splendid collaring by Taranaki prevented further scoro at this stage, but the Blues continued to play up with much dash, and at length Naylor scored. New South Wales, 13; Taranaki, 5. Exciting play followed, and as tho result of a passing from halfway, Collins scored, just boating Malono in the touchdown. Nov/ South Wales, 16; Taranaki, 5. The feature of tlio play following was Moir's splendid tackling for Taranaki, whioli stopped what seemed almost certain tries. Two marks by Taranaki men failed to add the major points, though both were good kicks. Intercepting a pass, King (Taranaki) then broke away and nearly scored, tho same player returning to tho attack as the result of a passing rush, but ho was forced out in the corner. The result of the force kick relieved the Blues, and after a dodgy run from his own twenty-five, S. Deane kicked, but Malon© beUt him for tho touch-down. Fine passing bv the Blues was stopped by the Taranaki defence. Mr. T. Cunningham, of Auckland, controlled the game satisfactorily to both sides.
