Mr. W. Bowes, wlio lias been appointed bandmaster to the Wellington Tramways Band, comes to this city with an extensivo record of work done in band music. He is one of a family of six, the father having been a North of England bandmaster for 35 years, and a. younger brother being at present solo •tenor with tho Wangamii Garrison Band. Mr. Bowes had his early training in a military band, and was for some years band sergeant in tho Bth Hussars. Ho served during the Boer War, and holds two medals with seven bat's. Karly lio gained a reputation as a player of the trombone and double bass, and for live years in succession was engaged by the Duke and Duches-s of Portland to provide music for their social gatherings. As a bandmaster in the Midlands lie was very successful, the Clawne Silver Prize Band, of which he was in charge, winning jhe 00-gninea shield, the Shirt'-Brook Challenge Cup, and a number of medals at the Crystal Palace International Band Festival in J907.
