ACCOUNTANTS.
THE INSTITUTE'S MEETING. The twentieth annual meeting of tho New Zealand Institute of Accountants was held last night in the meeting-room, Accountants'' Chambers, Johnston Street. The president, Mr. W. B. Hudson, presided, and thero were about thirty members present. In moving tho adoption of the report and balancesheet, the president remarked that the past year had been a fortunato one to tho institute, no storms had arisen, and no difficulties had taken place in relation to members, or in connection with kindred bodies. The institute wero co-operating with the Society of Accountants, and providing a subsidy to tlio Now Zealand University towards tho cost of accountancy examinations, and to advance the study of accountancy generally. The behaviour of tho society in. regard to students had been of a generous charactor. Besides tho abovo subsidy, tho society has given them freo of rent and partially furnished an oxcollcnt reading and writingroom, and it has placed tho meetingroom at their disposal to hold their fortnightly meetings in. The report and balaiicc-sheet, which was then adopted, showed tho institute to havo a good balance in hand. Tho membership of tho institute now stands ■at 380. - The samo figure as at tho beginning of tho yoai'. Tho election of officers to the council for the ensuing year resulted in Mr. W. B. Hudson (Group A, Wellington) being .re-electcd as president. Messrs. W. W. Bruce (Group B," Auckland), and Mr. Peter Bai-r (Group D, 'Duuedin) wero re-elected to tho council. • Through some misunderstanding no nominations had been received for the Christchurch (Group C) seat on tlio council, and as it is customary for members of a district only to nominate their representative on the council, and as thoro wero no Christchuroh members presont, tho matter of this election was held oyer. With regard to Group E (general), as Mr. W. 11. Scandrett, the retiring member, is away in England at tho presont time, this election was also held over. Some discussion occurred whilo tho election of an auditor was proceeding. Messrs. James Macintosh and M. Anderson wero nominated, and the re-elec-tion of tho Tetiring auditor, Mr. F. A. Allen, was also moved. Mr. Allen,' however, refused nomination, as ho thought tho post should go round. Othflr members thought that the sitting auditor should be re-elected. The institute, they said, should show an examplo to commercial firms in this respect. Mr. Allen, however, still declined nomination, and thereupon Mr. A. M. Anderson was declared on tho voting to be elected. Tho auditor's remuneration was fixed at five guineas per year.
