NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Glf.xcoe.] Holywell (Field Battery—Winifred), who went wrong on the ovo of tho Grajid National meeting at Riccarton, has been blistered on the knee, and turned out 'for a 'spell. Thet Penury two-yoar-old colt, whicli was recently sent to J. W. Lowo from Gisborne, will raco as a gelding. Although tho cable gives tho address of Mr. J. Heniiah as "Gisborne," tho Now Zealander who purchased tho hurdlo horso Forest Princo is probably tho Hastings sportsman who won tho National Steeples with Captain Jingle, and who has recently been racing that horso and Julian in Melbourne. Forest Princo is at the top of tho list in tho handicaps, this being principally due to running into minor places in important races. On August 16 ho was runner-up to Statu Quo at Flemington, and carried list. 101b. against his opponent's 3st. 91b. Possibly Mr. Hennah holds tho i.iwv that Forest Princo may bo a better horso with a spell,, and this is likely to be tho course adopted with him for J.he owner referred to is expected back •;tn tho Dominion at an early date. The Vasco—Mayhap youngstor, in C. '■ Vritchard's stablos, has gono slightly '.".amo, and will - require a spell. ' Word from the south states that Vicc- . 'Admiral is hopelessly broken down, j There is noW no elianco that ho will I make the first acceptance for the Now 1 Zealand Cup. ! On Saturday morning at Riccarton, \ just after E. Murfitt had been hurt on Fair Deal, a younger brother of his r.lso got into trouble. It appears that he was riding Pukerua and leading Raymond, when something startled both horses, and thev bolted, Raymond broke loose and sustained ho damage, httl, Pukcrua careered down the course niul collided with tho gate opposite Cutts's. Murfitt suffered slight concussion. and had to bo taken to tho hospital. • Included in tlif active brigade at Truntham is tho New Zealand Cup can-

djdato Mira, who will probably have his first race this season at tho Otaki mooting. Lowe is also pushing along Tione (Bezonian —Miss Phyllis), Secret Link, and Oharleroso, and this trio will probably raco either at Otaki or Wanganui.

Mr. L. Campion, owner of Toiiey, intends jumping the chestnut gelding in the near future. It will be surprising if. the son of Natator does not take kindly to the jumping business, for ho has a double cross of Painter blood in him.

Tho good-looking San Fran gelding San Wai is standing up well to his work oil tho Hastings track, and his trainer intends to give him a raco at Dannovirko next month. San Wai "showed, exceptional promise last summer, but ho wont wrong at tho Woodvillo meeting in December, and it was nccesarsy to fire him and givo him a long spell. A recent winner in Brisbane was the Hawke's Bay-bred ICohinoor : (Royal Fusilier—Bijou). Hardrada, who won the Adelaide National Hurdles on August. 16, also won, tho ovont in 1912.

On September 5 the racehorsesjn the estate of the lato Mr. J. C. Williamsou are to bo sold. The principal item in connection with the sale is that Mr. Williamson-, lin his will, provided that; tilio net proceeds should bo divided between certain charitable institutions in Svdney. and Melbounno. Snch an act alono is. a monument, to his memory (says a Sydney exchange).

Mr. W. J. Ralph's brood mare Guidwifo has been on a visit to Birkenhead. She arrived back in the nortih recently, and; is now running on Mr. Ralph a Aivaroa estate at Huntl.y. Re. yearling filly by Elysian from Guidwife is highly thought of by Mr. Ralph, and is stated to be something out of the ordinary.— Auckland "Star." Mr. -Biggins has disposed of. the rights of liis patent starting barrier to •an Auckland syndicate, and it is understood it is their intontion to try and place it all over tho world. Since tho first machine was made Mr. Higgins has considerably improved tho working- of it. The inachino as perfected will be in operation at the Avondalo Sprang meeting, when two races on each day will bo started with it.

A week or two ago Mr. W. Ryan shipped Lady B. south from Auckland on a visit to Mr. Donald Eraser's stallion Advance, tho mare dying on tho boat soon after it arrived at New Plymouth. On hearing of tho loss, Mr. Eraser notified Mr. Ryan that, as his made had died while journeying to his placc, if he 'had another mare ho would give a serviice free, and keep tho mare for twelve months. Mr. Ryan had nomare, but so taken was ho with Mr. Eraser's generosity that while in Christ.olmxreh 'last week ho purchased Orka, a full-sister to Orloff, by Stepniak—Sortie, to be mated with Advance.
