By Telegraph—Press Association-Copsrisrht ("Times"—Sydney "Sun" Special Cables.)
Quebec, August 25. Harry Thaw, the Pittsburg millionaire, who escaped from the asylum in which ho has beou confinod since ho murdered Stanford .White, his wife's lover, and escaped- to Canada, has engaged ten lawyers to defend him. Itis rumoured that, the lawyers have something in reserve to prevent Thaw's deportation after the habeas corpus proceedings on Wednesday next.
It is reported that the Canadian Government will deport Thaw to Vermont or New Hampshire, and that Thaw is likely to choose the former placo. Tho New York authorities are preparing for Thaw's extradition.
Thaw is showing arrogance, and not exhibiting the sense of responsibility displayed by him during previous trials. His lawyers threaten to abandon tho case unless he alters his demeanour. Thompson, the chauffeur, is still in gaol, being unable to find bail. He says he did not receive a cent for driving Thaw from the Matteawaii Home for Insane Criminals. He adds that lie would like to "squeal," but does not dare to do so.
Thaw s lawyers are intensely worried over Thompson's implied threat, and are promising him anything if he will hold his tongue.
Butler, the ringleader in Thaw's escape, received £5000, but has not yet paid three confederates, who threaten to expose everything. Thaw is holding a levee in his cell all day. Many women are sending him flowers.
