NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[By Glencoe.] Tlio Amberloy meeting takes place 011 Thursday next. This and tho Waipa meeting, which takes place on Wednesday, are the only racing fixtures; ill tho Dominion this week. Attention is diirected to the closing of acceptances for the Marton meeting. Those must bo in' tlio hands of -tho secretary by . 8 o'clock to-morrow evening. There appears to bo some doubt as to whether tho Hastings trainer, H. Hiokey, will, after all, ship a team to Sidney for the Spring meeting. It was originally intended to take four jumpers, but, on Friday . morning, Chief Marshal broke down badly. The Rover ,has been turned out, tho owner of Beacon has not" yet dccided whether to allow his horse to make the trip, and so-only Whakaweira is left. Final decision regarding Beacon will bo arrived at to-day, and, if it is decided to make the trip, the two horses (in charge of Hiokey and Jookeys Traill and Flynn.) will leave by the Maunganui on Friday.
A final reminder is given those interested that nominations for the Bannevirko; and Wanganui meetings closo this 1 evening.
Like most other metropolitan clubs, the Dunedin Jockey Club believes in assisting the Hunt Clubs. Last week it was decided to grant .the AYingatui course free of charge to the Otago Hunt Club for its race meeting on September 20. A donation, of £25 towards tho prizo money was also voted.
Included in J. W. Lowe's' team at Trentham aro a couple of yearlings belonging to Sir Jas. Carroll. One is a filly by tho imported Penury, and tho other is a Marble Arch colt.
Mr. G. Morse has been reappointed handicappcr to the Auckland Racing Club, and Mr. C. O'Connor will again act as starter for that body.
Fugue (Sir Laddo—Orchestra), who was bred at Fordcll and is now ono of J. Whitworth's Randwick team, won jtbc Shorts Handicap at Newcastle 011 August 13. C. Emerson was in the saddle. ■
So far/there is very little doing locally 011. the New Zealand Cup. Tho latest market reports indicate that some support- has been forthcoming for Masterpiece, 8011 [{eve, and Bronze.
Of the locally owned horses engaged in the New Zealand Cup nothing is so well handicapped as the chestnut marc Ceylon, who has been allotted Ust. 101b., or 3011). loss than weight for age. Mr. ]-l. Whitney's mare has on several occasions shown that she can stay well and she. won the' Otaio L'late (one mile and a half) at tho last New Zealand Cup meeting like a good performer, albeit that there was nothing of much merit behind her. Tho Nelson Clip (ono milo and a quarter) also fell to her, and next day sho was only beaten by a noso by Sinapis, to whom sho was conceding 21b.
In tho past, light boys have not been able to get tho most out of her, and sho lias always run her best races under welter weights, but if a horseman such as W. 801 l were secured to steer her in tho New Zealand Cup, she should givo a good account of herself under such an easy impost.
Nominations for all handicaps at the As'hburton County Racing Club's spring meeting closo at 9 a.m. to-morrow.
