Thaw (who escaped lrom custody at the Hospital for Insane Criminals p.t Matteawan—to which he had been committed as the result of his trial for the murder of Stanford White) lias decided to fight 'his deportation or extradition on (ho ground that' he is bearing a through ticket to Europe. Vancouver, August 20. The Sherbrooke (Quebec) Court has granted a writ of habeas• corpus in tho Tiraw case, at tho ■ instance of Thaw's lawyer. Newspaper men are crowding into tho little town with tho object of sscitring an interview with Thaw, to induce him to describe how to escaped. Thaw, however, refusos to make tho details public. ("Times"—Sydney "Suit" Special Cables.) Ottawa, August 20. Thaw was capturcd an liour after ho had orossed the frontier. A sheriff who recognised him while lie was travelling on tho Maine -railway followed him to Canada. lie admitted his identity, but declared that he could not bo extradited, as he had not committed any crime. (Rec. August 21, 6.35 p.m.) Quebec, August 21. Thaw has been charged with unlawfully escaping from an asylum, and remanded into custody. If this charge fails he will ho prosecuted for bribing tho asylum attendants. ■ The indications point to a protracted legal battle. Thaw's family has engaged the most brilliant Quebec lawyers. Thaw's mother broke down upon hearing the news of his. arrest; She declares that the news is untrue, and only a plan to hide the tracks of tho real Thaw.
