EXPEDITION TO THE GREAT barrier." By TeleirftDh—Prcßs Association—Copyright (Reo. August 21, 8.35 p.m.) Sydney, August 21. An American scientific expedition has arrived here, en route to Hie Groat Barrier Reel* to study coral reef animals, under the auspices of the Carnegie Institution at "Washington. Dr. A. G. Mayer is in charge of the expedition. Among the subjects to be investigated will be the phosphorescence in sea animate, embryology of sea urchins, and star ftshes, and the relationship between the salt of sea, water and the rate of transmission of impulses by nerves.
, Dr. A. Mayer is a well-known zoologist, and in. addition to several years spoilt in science laboratories, has accompanied various scientific expeditions—Bahamas (1892-3), Australia (1896), Fiji Islands (1897), oruiso of the Albatross through the tropioal waters of tho Pacific (1899-1900), etc. His publications include "Medusae of the World" (three .volumes, 1910), and dissertations on the chemical cause of animal movements, and on tho converse reflation'between tho ciliary and ntwo-niuscu-lar movemonts in marine animals.
