TEACHERS' SALARIES.
JHE IMPROVEMENTS NECESSARY. (Br Telegraph.—Press Association.) . Dunedin, August 21. There have recently come before the Otagoi Education Board resolutions pointing , out tho . necessity -of helping school teachers, more especially those in the back-blocks, both in ' the matter of increasing salaries and aifording assistance by extra staffing. The Head Teachers' Association' recently passed resolutions onthe subject and tho Farmers Union wrote to the board suggesting that the salaries of teachers in back-block schools should be supplemented by a small subsidy." At a meeting of the board to-day Inspector Richardson, presented ;a .reports-covering the grounds mapped out by. these resolutions. The report suggested that the board should give general support to the resolutions forwarded, by the association in order to. secure such improvements, as follows:—(1) Making., entrance to 'the teaching service 89 attractive as tho entrance to other branches of the Public Service; (2) bringing the'annual increments into line with the increments granted in other branohes of tho Public Service; (3) equalising salaries of teachers with those in other branches; (4) differentiating to a greater extent than Is now done between tho salaries in rural schools and those of ossistantships in large centres.. 1 i •A resolution was carried by the board "That the board extends its hear ty support b tho Head Teachers' Association and congratulates it on the steps it has taken to get justice at last." It was decided that the opinion of the board' bo communicated to the Minister for Education. ;.
