NEW CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MOVE BY BUSINESS MEN. For some time past a movement has been, on foot amongst business houses of the city to establish a chamber of commerce founded on lines calculated to make it an active forco in the business affairs of tho city. The efforts of the promoters hnve been so successful that the new chamber came into being at a largely-at-tended meeting held in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. The non. C. M. Luke, M.L.C., was voted to the chair, a.ml after briefly reviewing t'lio history of tho movement and tho need for collective action on progressive linos, iho announced, that up to the present no fewer than 92 representatives of leading business firms in Wellington had signed on as members. It was decided to style tho new body tho Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce, and that it should be du/y registered as an association formed for purposes not of gain. A provisional .council of 11 members was set up to carry on the business 'of tho chamber until, the annual meeting, three months hbnee. This council consists of tho Hon. C. It. Luke, ;M.L.C. (S. Luke and Co., Ltd.), Messrs. W. H. P. Barber (Barber and Co.), James Reid (Keene and Reid), A.. Loigh Hunt (New Zealand Farmers' Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd.), H. A. Fox (Office Appliance Co.), George Winder (Georgo AVinder and Co.), Tlios. Bush (Union Clothing Co.), Robert Hall (R. Hall and Co.), J. Castlo (chemist), F. Townsend (Townsend and Paul), W. Allen (Veitch and Allen), J, Brodie (J. Brodio and Co.), W. Jack (Kempthorne, Pi-osser and Co.), W. Smith (Smith and Smith, Ltd.). Mr. R. W. Gilbert was appointed secretary, pro!, tem. , The annual subscription was fixed at •El Is., with an entrance feo of a like amount.
After further formal business had been transacted, it was decided to .hold a. general meeting of members within the month.
A meeting- of tlie ncwly-electcd council was held later, at which tho Hon. C. M. Luko was elected president, llr. A. Leigh Hunt vico-prcsident, and Mr. .Tamos Reid treasurer., The council then adjourned to meet again on Holiday next.
